BEVERLY HILLS, November 24, (THEWILL) – Ahead of the exhibition bout between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr which will take place over eight two-minute rounds, the California State Athletic Commission has come out to clear the air about details of the fight.
The legendary pair with a combined age of 105, are both coming out of retirement to slug it out in a contest for charity on Saturday, November 28. And Andy Forster, California State Athletic Commission executive director has insisted that both fighters faced “thorough” medical examinations and anti-doping tests.
“Tyson and Jones Jr. won’t be wearing headgear for the fight. They’ll be lacing up 12-ounce gloves and there won’t be any judges present at the fight to score the action.”
This technically implies that there will not be a winner unless a knockout somehow occurs, or either fighter is deemed unfit to continue.
“They can move around and make some money, but I told them if you get cut, it’s over,” Forster clarified.
Tyson, the once “baddest man on the planet”, has insisted that the bout is “bigger” than him having reflected often on his changed lifestyle.
“It has a charity exponent and I look at that as bigger than me. Buying a new car, a new girlfriend, a new mansion, a new plane … that doesn’t do it for me anymore. It just doesn’t work.”
The 54-year-old also declared his desire to face current heavyweight greats such as Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder for charity purposes.
“I think they’re brilliant. They’re brilliant fighters,” Tyson confessed.
“They could do so much for society. They could have exhibitions, and take the money from the exhibitions, because they’re such big crowd pleasers, and they could help so many people.
“There’s so many people out there that we can do so much for, and it wouldn’t even be a tenth of their charitable heart to do something like that.
“In fact, fight exhibitions with me, and most of our charity would go to people who desperately need it.”
