November 10, (THEWILL) – Inter Miami’s championship dreams ended following a surprising 3-2 defeat against Atlanta United in the Major League Soccer playoffs. The result marks a premature exit for the Florida-based team, despite their impressive regular season performance and the presence of eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient Lionel Messi.
The match delivered intense action from the start, with Miami taking an early lead through Matias Rojas in the 17th minute.
However, Atlanta’s Jamal Thiare responded with two quick goals, transforming the contest’s momentum. A disallowed goal from Diego Gomez further complicated Miami’s position in this crucial encounter.
Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan performed exceptionally well throughout the match, making several crucial interventions to deny Miami’s attacks.
The scores were levelled to 2-2 in the 65th minute when Messi converted a header from Marcelo Weigandt’s cross.
Atlanta delivered the decisive blow through Polish midfielder Bartosz Slisz, who headed home Pedro Amador’s cross at the back post.
This goal proved sufficient to eliminate Miami from the competition, despite their status as favourites following their regular season success.
The victory propels Atlanta into an Eastern Conference semi-final matchup against Orlando, while New York Red Bulls will face New York City in the other semi-final contest. For Miami and Messi, attention now shifts toward preparation for the 2025 season.
