August 14, (THEWILL) — Three of the 20 managers in the 2025/2026 English Premier League season will begin the campaign aged under 40, when the competition kicks off tomorrow.
Brighton and Hove Albion’s Fabian Hürzeler, Southampton’s Russell Martin, and Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna form the youngest group of head coaches in England’s top flight this year.
Their appointments stand out in a league where most managers are at least a decade older, reflecting the rarity of such youthful representation at this level.
Hürzeler, at 32 years old, enters his second EPL season after joining Brighton in June 2024 from German side St Pauli, where he won promotion from the 2. Bundesliga.
His tactical style is defined by disciplined pressing structures and an emphasis on short, controlled build-up play.
The youngest permanent manager in EPL history, he has already faced scrutiny for adapting continental methods to the faster tempo of English football.
McKenna, who is 39, will guide Ipswich into their first top-flight campaign since 2002, having claimed back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship.
A former Manchester United assistant, the Northern Irishman’s analytical approach and ability to organise defensive shape have been credited as key to Ipswich’s rise.
This season marks his first experience managing at the highest domestic level.
Also aged 39, Martin leads Southampton back into the EPL following a single-season absence. His preference for patient possession and controlled passing patterns was central to the club’s promotion push last term.
Martin, who previously managed Swansea City and Milton Keynes Dons, will now face the challenge of applying those principles against the pace and physicality of EPL opposition.
The trio’s presence offers a contrast to the league’s veteran-heavy dugouts, with 17 other clubs managed by coaches aged 40 or above.
While their backgrounds differ, Hürzeler arriving from abroad, McKenna building from League One, and Martin refining his philosophy in the Championship, all three face the immediate task of proving that age is no barrier to sustaining results in the EPL.
Their progress will be tested from the opening weekend onward.
