April 01, (THEWILL) — Golf legend Tiger Woods says he will step away from golf to seek treatment after being arrested on DUI charges following a crash in Florida on Friday, March 27.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, March 31, Woods said:
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” he continued.
“I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
Woods, 50, was involved in a rollover crash after overtaking a truck pulling a trailer. No one was injured.
He was also charged with property damage and refusal to comply with a lawful test. While he passed a breathalyzer, he declined to take a urine test.
Police said Woods appeared lethargic, was sweating heavily, and had very dilated pupils. Officers also found two hydrocodone pills, a prescription opioid, in his pocket.
Through his attorney, Woods has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial.
As a result of his decision to seek treatment, Woods will not compete in the 2026 Masters Tournament, scheduled for April 9–12.
The 15-time major champion had recently returned to professional golf after a long period out due to injuries. He was previously involved in a serious car crash in 2021 that required surgery, as well as an earlier incident in 2009.
