November 18, (THEWILL) – William Troost-Ekong’s outstanding Africa Cup of Nations MVP performance did not earn him a place among the final five contenders for the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year Award.
The Confederation of African Football released its final shortlist, which features his compatriot Ademola Lookman and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.
The prestigious ceremony, scheduled for December 16 in Marrakech, Morocco, evaluates performances between January 2024 and October 2024.
Notable exclusions from the initial 10-person list include Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba, who maintained an unbeaten streak with Bayer Leverkusen, and DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba.
The final nominees comprise Simon Adingra from Brighton and Hove Albion, Serhou Guirassy of Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi, Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman, and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Williams appears in other categories, including Goalkeeper of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year.
The South African shot-stopper faces competition from Manchester United’s Andre Onana, Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali, Ivory Coast’s Yahia Fofana, and Egypt’s Mostafa Shobeir in the goalkeeping category.
The awards extend beyond individual recognition, with categories for Coach of the Year, Club of the Year, and National Team of the Year.
Current African champions Ivory Coast lead the national team nominations alongside Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, and DR Congo.
