July 17, (THEWILL) – The first American sweep of the men’s 100 metres, the sport’s premier event, in 31 years at an athletics meet, was led by Fred Kerley on Saturday in an All-American night for track and field.
Kerley surged to the finish line to win by less than 0.02 seconds over Marvin Bracy and the 2021 U.S. champion Trayvon Bromell. There was a 0.002 difference between second and third. It was the first American sweep since Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, and Dennis Mitchell won gold, silver, and bronze in 1991 in Tokyo.
In an interview after their sensational victory, Kerley revealed: “We said we were going to do it and we did it.”
This all-American outburst of speed happened just after the jets overflew Hayward Stadium, the still-comfortable venue on the campus of the University of Oregon that was refurbished to host the championships for the first time in the United States.
The event itself brought back memories of days when the United States dominated the track scene, much like Jamaica and Usain Bolt did for nearly a decade starting in 2008.
