July 12, (THEWILL) – At the CONCACAF W Championship in Mexico, on Monday night, Kristie Mewis scored in the 89th minute to break a scoreless deadlock, and the United States defeated Mexico 1-0.
In the eight-team event, the United States topped Group A, and they will play Costa Rica in the semifinals. As one of the top two teams in their group, the Americans have already qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
In the 73rd minute, Lizbeth Ovalle of Mexico was penalised with a red card for a foul on Rose Lavelle. Despite appearing to be offside, Mewis’ goal for the USWNT was not reviewed.
Mexico played strong defence against the top-ranked United States, but the hosts failed to advance to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that will take place next summer.
Jamaica won 4-0 on Monday night, against Haiti to move to the World Cup for the second time in a row and to a semifinal game against Canada. The Reggae Girlz scored four goals, including two each from Bunny Shaw, Trudi Carter, and Drew Spence.
