January 04, (THEWILL) – Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk, could be facing a prolonged absence from action after suffering a hamstring injury that is reportedly “worse than first feared.”

THEWILL recalls that the injury occurred during Monday’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford, and van Dijk was substituted at half-time. News from Anfield had it that van Dijk will be seeing a specialist later on Wednesday, though the club is yet to issue an official statement on the injury.

If the affected hamstring proves to be serious, Liverpool may be forced to enter the transfer market in search of a replacement, despite manager Jurgen Klopp’s recent statement that the club “cannot play monopoly” with regard to transfers.

However, Klopp also indicated that the club would consider making a move if the “right player and financial situation” presented itself. It appears a slim set of defensive options will force the Reds to find additional manpower, especially for the duration of van Dijk’s time on the sidelines.
