July 6 (THEWILL) — The Venice Film Festival will honor George Clooney with the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at its 2026 edition.
The organizers announced the award on July 6, 2026.
Clooney, 65, will be recognized for his work as an actor, director and producer, as well as his long presence at the festival.
He has attended Venice for nearly three decades and has premiered several films there.
Festival organizers said Clooney represents a mix of classic Hollywood star power and modern filmmaking, highlighting his work across a range of films including “Ocean’s Eleven”, “Michael Clayton”, “Gravity”, “The Descendants” and “Good Night, and Good Luck.”
They also noted his directing work, including “The Ides of March” and “Suburbicon”, as well as his commitment to humanitarian causes.
Clooney said he was honoured by the award, adding: “I’ve had so many extraordinary moments in Venice.
This festival is without question my favorite and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honor. It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.”
Festival director Alberto Barbera described Clooney as “a complete and charismatic artist” with a career built on credibility, versatility and charm.
The 83rd Venice Film Festival will run from September 2 to 12, 2026, with the full lineup to be announced later in July.
