June 04, (THEWILL) – Max Verstappen finished in front at the Spanish Grand Prix held at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, to continue to solidify his dominance in the 2023 Formula 1 season.

The Dutch driver extended his lead in the standings after just seven races, as he claimed his fifth victory and secured his third consecutive win. With an impressive total of 144 points, Verstappen now holds a commanding 39-point advantage over his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, who sits in second place. The only other driver with a noteworthy point total is Fernando Alonso, who has accumulated at least 70 points.

Verstappen’s performance in the Spanish Grand Prix showcased his unrivalled skill and superiority on the track. From the moment he secured pole position, the outcome of the race seemed almost predetermined. Leading from start to finish, Verstappen even recorded the fastest lap of the event. His dominance was evident as Lewis Hamilton, crossing the finish line in second place, trailed a staggering 24.090 seconds behind.

While Hamilton’s fans celebrated his runner-up position, it was clear that Verstappen had firmly established his control of the circuit for another year running and the shift of dominance from Mercedes to Red Bull is all too obvious. However, on Sunday, Mercedes had a positive day overall, with George Russell successfully fending off Perez to secure third place and his first podium finish of the season.

After a disappointing 2022 campaign plagued by car issues, Mercedes has made significant improvements this season. Hamilton had publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the car’s performance last year, but the team has diligently addressed those concerns during the offseason. As the F1 calendar moves forward, the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal is next on the schedule. Verstappen will enter the race as the defending champion after claiming victory in 2022. The event’s return to Montreal is highly anticipated, as it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
