July 25, (THEWILL) – At the French Grand Prix on Sunday, Max Verstappen claimed his seventh victory of the 2022 Formula One season to maintain his momentum towards the defence of his title.
Unfortunately, race challenger, Charles Leclerc, after winning the pole position in qualifying and appearing to be in a strong position early on for a second consecutive victory, crashed on the 18th lap and could not finish the race. Therefore, Verstappen, who started in second place, was able to triumph and win easily at Circuit Paul Ricard.
Verstappen finished a whole 10.587 seconds ahead of the rest of the circuit, giving him a comfortable victory. Over the last 30 circuits of the race, there was not much debate about the outcome with the Red Bull reigning champion in an unassailable lead.
With another another victory, Verstappen increased his lead in the drivers’ standings for the season, as Sergio Perez reduced the distance for second place. Sir Lewis Hamilton placed second in the race on Sunday, which was his best finish of the 2022 campaign. George Russell, the second member of the Mercedes team, took third place to join Hamilton on the podium.
The drivers will return to action the following week for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday and Leclerc will be hoping he can avoid any further crashes to improve his chances of winning another race in this calendar.
