November 18, (THEWILL) — Comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, and social activist, Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), have both issued public apologies following their physical confrontation aboard a United Nigeria Airlines flight on Monday.
Videos circulating online captured the moment the two men exchanged blows onboard the aircraft. The airline later confirmed that they were deboarded and immediately handed over to security personnel.
In a video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, Mr Jollof apologised for his conduct, describing the incident as “out of character” and stating that he reacted in self-defence.
“I want to use this medium to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and the passengers that boarded the airline. I was only defending myself. This isn’t my kind of person. It will never happen again.
“To my lovely wife, I know you’re proud of me. To my kids, I am sorry, Daddy will never do this again. To my boss, I am very sorry. I kept my cool because I always preach that when people use words against you, you stay calm”, he said.
Mr Jollof also alleged that VeryDarkMan initiated the confrontation by hurling insults at him, adding that he regretted how the situation escalated.
VeryDarkMan, in his own statement, also tendered an apology, saying he takes “full responsibility” for the disruption and acknowledging that the altercation should not have occurred.
“I would really like to apologise for what happened yesterday on United Nigeria Airlines. What happened yesterday was not supposed to happen, and I will take full responsibility for it”, he said.
He noted that the fight caused delays for passengers who had important engagements and apologised to everyone aboard, including the pilot and flight crew.
The influencer admitted the incident was avoidable, adding that he had “acted irresponsibly.”
“Looking back at what happened yesterday, I really didn’t like that part. Even though some people saw it as a cruise on social media, I acted irresponsibly.”
Both men may face criminal prosecution, as aviation authorities continue reviewing the incident.
