April 08, (THEWILL) — Veteran Nollywood actor, Davis Ofor, best known for playing Clarus in the sitcom “The New Masquerade”, died on Tuesday. He was 85.
His death was announced by fellow actor, Tony Akposheri, who acted alongside him in the popular series.
In a tribute, Akposheri expressed shock over the loss.
“Today, my heart is heavy. Davis Ofor, fondly known as Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone”, he wrote.
He recalled their recent time together, noting, “We crossed into the New Year together, laughing, talking, sharing memories, and speaking hopefully about the days ahead.
“You were more than a familiar face on screen. You were a friend, a brother, a man with warmth, humour, and a presence that could light up any space. It is hard to believe that the voice I heard not long ago is now a memory. Hard to accept that someone so full of life can suddenly become a story we tell.
“Rest well, my friend. You came, you gave joy, you made your mark, and you will never be forgotten.”
Ofor rose to fame through “The New Masquerade”, a long-running Nigerian sitcom created by James Iroha. The show aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and became a household favourite for its humour and memorable characters.
His portrayal of Clarus, the comedic houseboy, earned him national recognition and made him a beloved figure in Nigerian homes.
In later years, Ofor stepped away from acting and devoted his life to ministry. He was ordained in the Aetherius Church in London and became known as Rev. Davis Ofor. He also faced health challenges, including vision loss due to glaucoma.
The cause of his death has not been made public.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and fans, celebrating his legacy and the joy he brought to audiences.
