June 07, (THEWILL) – Renowned Nigerian highlife musician, Mike Ejeagha, celebrated for blending Igbo folklore and proverbs into his music, has passed away at 95.
Ejeagha died on Friday night, at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha.
Born in 1930, Ejeagha began his career in the mid-20th century and became a key figure in Igbo music for over 60 years. He rose to fame after making an appearance on NTA’s Igbo program ‘Akuko N Egwu’ in 1972.
His classic track “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” recently regained popularity after comedian, Brain Jotter, used it in a viral dance challenge, introducing it to a new generation.
A pioneer of 1980s Nigerian highlife, Ejeagha captivated audiences with his unique Igbo folk sound, leaving a lasting impression on multiple generations.
Although his passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigerian music, his artistic contributions and cultural impact live on.
