June 13, (THEWILL) – Nigerian singer, Anthony Ebuka Victor, popularly known as Victony, has shared how a 2021 car accident changed his parents’ perspective on his music career.
The “Soweto” hit maker revealed during an interview with Behind The Prestige podcast that his parents initially wanted him to complete his education and become an engineer rather than pursue music professionally
Their stance changed following his April 2021 accident that claimed one life and left three others injured. The overwhelming public support that followed, including viral “Pray for Victony” campaigns on social media, made his parents realise the significance of his musical career.
“My parents were not cool with me doing music from the jump. They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive of it.
“They hoped I’d finish school and become an engineer. But when I had my accident in 2021 and they saw how much impact I had on people, how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony’, they realised my music career meant a lot to me and just let me do what I wanted”, he said.
The artist, who rose to fame through his collaboration with Mayorkun on “Holy Father” and later with his global hit “Soweto”, has undergone four surgeries since the accident. He is currently signed to Mainland Block Party, a record label founded by Nigerian music executive, Tobi Mohammed.
In a related revelation, Victony disclosed he has never performed on stage without taking alcohol but is now attempting to do so during his ongoing ‘Stubborn’ tour to create a more authentic connection with fans.
“I’m trying to do this tour, so wow, it’s a big challenge. I have never been on stage without taking alcohol. But [for this tour], I’m trying to see my fans clearly and truly connect with them. I just want to try.” He said
Victony has previously described the life-changing accident as a “blessing in disguise,” acknowledging how it ultimately helped solidify his music career and gain his family’s support.
