July 08, (THEWILL) — The Wales women’s national football team bus was involved in a road traffic collision whilst travelling to their final training session ahead of their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 group-stage match against France on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near the team’s hotel in Weinfelden, approximately 40 kilometres from the Kybunpark Stadium in St Gallen, Switzerland, where the squad was due to train.
All passengers aboard the team bus and occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision escaped without injury, according to the Football Association of Wales (FAW). The training session was immediately cancelled following the incident, with the FAW stating the team would “likely do something later on” regarding their match preparations. The organisation confirmed they had been in constant communication with UEFA regarding the situation.
Head coach, Rhian Wilkinson, and captain, Angharad James, were not on the team bus during the collision, having travelled separately in a media vehicle to attend a pre-match press conference. Speaking from St Gallen, Wilkinson said the priority was ensuring all players and staff were brought together and removed from the scene. “Everyone is okay. Our priority is for everyone to be together and away from the scene,” she stated during an impromptu media briefing.
The coach acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident on the squad, describing the team’s state following the collision. “We are shaken. We’re away from the team right now. Football comes second in these moments,” Wilkinson explained. She confirmed that decisions regarding match preparation would be made after checking on all players and staff members, emphasising that the welfare of the team remained the primary concern.
Wales face France on Wednesday at the Kybunpark Stadium, following their opening 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands on Saturday. The match is a crucial opportunity for the Welsh side to register their first points in Group A of the tournament, though their immediate focus remains on ensuring all team members have recovered from the afternoon’s events.
