October 03, (THEWILL) – Watford manager Xisco Munoz has been fired. With the club in 14th place in the Premier League table, Munoz is the first managerial casualty of the season.
A club statement said: “Watford FC confirms Xisco Munoz has left his post as the club’s Head Coach. The board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving.
“The Hornets will always be grateful to Xisco for the part he played in securing last season’s promotion and wish him well for his future career in football. No further club comment will be available until the imminent announcement of a new Head Coach.”
The club with three Nigerians, Emmanuel Dennis, Oghenekaro Etebo and William Troost-Ekong, in the starting lineup, is based in Watford, Hertfordshire. They returned in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, after gaining promotion from the English Championship this season.
In December 2020, he took over from Vladimir Ivic and led the team to automatic promotion from the Championship. They had won seven points from their first seven league games, with Munoz’s last game in command a 1-0 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday, which goalkeeper Ben Foster characterized as a “1-0 battering”
