February 22, (THEWILL) – Jurgen Klopp has expressed his disappointment after Liverpool’s 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie on Tuesday.
Despite taking an early lead through Darwin Nunez and following it up with a Mohamed Salah goal, Liverpool were unable to keep up with Real Madrid’s tempo and were pegged back to 2-2 at half-time. Real Madrid dominated the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to effectively seal the tie.
Speaking after the match, Klopp admitted that his side had a lot of work to do ahead of the return leg. He said: “The beginning was outstanding. It was perfect, exactly how we wanted to play. The whole first half was good besides the goals. But we couldn’t keep up with their pace in the second half.”
Despite the uphill battle facing his side, Klopp remained optimistic and praised his players for their efforts. “We will go there and play a football game. It will be a massive challenge. But we have to play in the Premier League first and make sure we learn from this game,” he said.
Liverpool have until March 15 to prepare for the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, but before that, they must navigate a tough run of domestic fixtures that include tricky ties against Crystal Palace and the resurgent Manchester United.
