July 18, (THEWILL) – After a tumultuous week of upset in the camp of Nigeria’s Super Falcons caused by the back-and-forth between coach Randy Waldrum and the NFF and between the NFF and the ladies, the team is eagerly gearing up for their ninth participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
With the tournament in Australia and New Zealand imminent, Captain Onome Ebi shared insights into Nigeria’s preparations and their ambitious goals. Drawn into Group B alongside Canada, Ireland, and host nation Australia, the Nigerian team is not oblivious of the tough competition ahead but the squad is steadfast in their determination to make a mark on the global stage.
Ebi revealed that the team’s preparations are progressing well, with a strong focus on improving all aspects of their game from defense to attack. She noted: “We are focusing on the small details which we don’t want to miss and also, we don’t want to repeat mistakes that we have had in the past.”
With their sights set on a successful campaign, Nigeria’s ambition is to perform at their utmost best in the tournament. Ebi’s belief in her team was clear: “I have faith in my team and I like our current state of mind. We are motivated and we want to hoist Nigeria’s flag to the highest point. The ball is in our court as players and we have to do everything to be on fire physically and mentally for this opportunity.”
In Group B, Nigeria faces a daunting task, with Olympic champions Canada, Ireland, and host nation Australia standing in their way. Having previously encountered Canada twice, the Super Falcons are aware of the strength of the north Americans. Ebi acknowledged the challenges posed by their group: “We are aware that we are in a difficult pool. But, she added: “We have to be ready to face them.”
