November 08, (THEWILL) – Chinese tennis sensation Zheng Qinwen progressed to the final of the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh following a commanding 6-3 7-5 victory over Czech competitor Barbora Krejcikova on Friday.
The Olympic champion demonstrated exceptional control in the opening set, establishing an early 3-0 advantage through effective service breaks. Despite Krejcikova saving three set points at 5-2, Zheng closed out the first set without dropping a point in the final game.
The second set initially mirrored the first, with Zheng racing to another 3-0 lead through two service breaks. However, Krejcikova mounted a significant response, claiming four consecutive games with two breaks of serve to shift the momentum.
With the score level at 5-5, seventh-seeded Zheng manufactured a crucial break of serve before successfully serving for the match. Though Krejcikova saved one match point, Zheng maintained her composure to complete the straight-sets victory.
The Chinese player now awaits the winner of the second semi-final between world number one Aryna Sabalenka and American competitor Coco Gauff, scheduled for later on Friday.
