February 05, (THEWILL) – Aymen Mahious has won the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Golden Boot award, becoming the second Algerian to achieve this feat in the history of the competition.
The 25-year-old USM Alger striker scored five goals in all, solidifying his place as the tournament’s top scorer. Despite missing a penalty in the final against Senegal, Mahious’ goals against Libya and Ethiopia in the group stage, as well as a last-minute goal against Cote d’Ivoire in the quarter-final and a brace in the 5-0 semi-final win against Niger, earned him the award.
Mahious finished two goals ahead of the nearest challenger, 22-year-old Razafindranaivo Koloina of Madagascar, who scored three goals in six matches. Mahious succeeds 2020 CHAN Golden Boot winner, Soufiane Rahimi, who also scored five goals in that tournament.
Mahious is now the third player to achieve this feat, with only Ayoub El Kaabi’s nine goals for Morocco during the 2018 event surpassing his and Rahimi’s tally.
The Algerian joins the ranks of Elia Meshack, Chisom Chikatara, Ahmed Akaichi and Bernard Parker, as winners of the CHAN Golden Boot award. He joins his countryman, El Arbi Hillel Soudani, who won the award in 2011, as the second Algerian to achieve this feat.
