May 17, (THEWILL)- Massimiliano Allegri has been dismissed from his role as Juventus manager, following his unsavoury behaviour during and after Wednesday’s Coppa Italia final. The 56-year-old Italian’s departure was announced by the club in an official statement, citing “certain behaviour during and after the Italian Cup final that the club deemed incompatible with its values.”
Despite Juventus lifting their 15th Coppa Italia Cup on Wednesday night, Allegri’s celebrations were marred by controversy. He was sent off in the dying minutes for ranting at match officials before dismissively waving away sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, amid the post-match jubilation. More seriously, Allegri is alleged to have manhandled and threatened the chief editor of a newspaper, Tuttosport, before the post-match press conference.
While rumours had been swirling about Allegri’s potential summer replacement by Bologna coach Thiago Motta, Juventus were forced to act swiftly due to the manager’s misdemeanours. The Turin giants sit fourth in Serie A on 67 points, level with Monday’s opponents Bologna, with two matches remaining as they vie for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Juventus have not specified whether Allegri’s dismissal was with “just cause”, which could potentially save them from paying the remaining year of his €7 million contract. The Italian Football Federation has launched a disciplinary investigation into the incident, with Allegri already handed an automatic two-match ban that could be extended.
