February 27, (THEWILL) — American actor, Bobby J. Brown, best known for playing Officer Bobby Brown on the hit HBO series ‘The Wire’, has died at the age of 62, following a tragic barn fire in Maryland on February 24, 2026.
The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death an accident, listing the cause as diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation.
Brown’s agent, Albert Bramante, confirmed the death in a statement on Thursday, describing him as “an actor of immense talent and even greater integrity” who brought passion and discipline to his work.
“He transitioned from a champion in the boxing ring to a powerful presence on screen with a grace and dedication that inspired everyone at the agency. He was a true professional and an even better human being. We are heartbroken by this loss”, Bramante said and asked for privacy for the family.
According to family members, Brown was trying to jump-start a vehicle inside a barn when a fire broke out. He reportedly called for a fire extinguisher, but by the time family members reached him, the building was already engulfed in flames. His wife suffered severe burns while attempting to save him.
Reina Brown, his older daughter, said learning of her father’s death “didn’t feel real”, calling it “a huge loss” for the family.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Brown first made a name for himself as a boxer, winning five Golden Glove Championships before turning to acting. He later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and went on to establish a steady career in film and television.
In addition to ‘The Wire’, where he appeared in more than a dozen episodes, Brown also appeared in ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’, ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’, ‘The Corner’ and ‘We Own This City’, often portraying law enforcement roles.
Brown also worked behind the camera, directing two documentaries: ‘Off the Chain’, which explored the abuse of American pit bull terriers, and ‘Tear the Roof Off: The Untold Story of Parliament Funkadelic’. He donated part of the profits from ‘Off the Chain’ to the Humane Society of the United States.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and colleagues who remember him for his warmth and dedication to his craft.
His passing marks another loss for the ‘The Wire’ community, which has already seen several cast members pass away, including James Ransone, who died in December 2025, and Isiah Whitlock Jr., who passed away later that same month.
Brown is survived by his wife and children.
