March 21, (THEWILL) — American actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, has died at the age of 54.
Brendon’s family confirmed the news on social media on Friday, saying he “passed in his sleep of natural causes.”
They added:
“He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.
“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art.”
Brendon played Xander Harris, the loyal best friend of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Buffy Summers, on the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003.
He received three Saturn Award nominations for his performance, including two for Best TV Actor and one for Best TV Supporting Actor.
His twin brother, Kelly Donovan Schultz, even served as his body double in two episodes.
After Buffy, Brendon appeared in TV shows such as “Criminal Minds”, “Private Practice”, and “Kitchen Confidential”, as well as films including “Psycho Beach Party”, “Big Gay Love”, and “Redwood”.
He was open about his personal struggles, including depression, a heart attack, two spinal surgeries for cauda equina syndrome, a stutter, and battles with substance addiction and alcoholism.
Co-star Alyson Hannigan paid tribute on Instagram:
“My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love, and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”
Brendon’s work and kindness left a lasting impression on fans and colleagues alike, and tributes continue to pour in from around the world.
