March 31, (THEWILL) — Hollywood actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, received an honorary doctorate from Ulster University in Belfast on Monday, for his work in public service, environmental advocacy, and the arts.
The 78-year-old actor and former California governor described the moment as “unbelievable” and reflected on his long connection to the city.
Schwarzenegger first visited Belfast in 1966 as a young bodybuilder. He said the trip helped him overcome his fear of public speaking and was a key moment in his early career.
“And it’s wonderful to be back in Northern Ireland and to kind of get to see, this is not something that I dreamt of when I was 19 years old… that one day I will be coming here to get an honorary doctorate degree, it’s unbelievable,”
“This was a breakthrough… I always tell people about that breakthrough that happened here in Belfast”, he said.
Students welcomed him with cheers and signs referencing his famous roles, including “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”.
He also spoke about the value of education, calling it “the foundation – a great springboard for your future.”
During the visit, Schwarzenegger met students and answered questions about his career in bodybuilding, film, and politics.
The visit marked almost 60 years since his first trip to Belfast, which he said helped shape his journey to global success.
