September 01, (THEWILL) — Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface, has completed a season-long loan transfer to Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, both clubs confirmed on Monday. The 24-year-old forward joins Bremen on deadline day following a summer of unsuccessful transfer negotiations.
Bremen manager, Horst Steffen, expressed confidence in the new signing, stating he believes Boniface will prove crucial to the team’s campaign. The loan agreement provides Bremen with an experienced striker who demonstrated his quality during Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten title-winning season.
Boniface endured disappointment in the transfer market earlier this year when Al Nassr withdrew a reported €70 million euro bid in January, choosing to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa instead. More recently, a potential move to AC Milan collapsed after the striker allegedly failed medical examinations, despite Leverkusen agreeing terms.
The forward was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten double triumph in 2023/2024, contributing 14 goals and nine assists across 23 league appearances. His performances helped establish him as a key figure in the club’s attacking setup throughout that successful campaign.
Boniface becomes the latest player to depart Leverkusen this transfer window, joining an exodus that includes Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong and former manager Xabi Alonso. The departures mark a significant reshaping of the squad that achieved domestic glory that season especially following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, who had been in charge of the outfit for just three games.
