September 01, (THEWILL) — Marc Guehi will remain at Crystal Palace after a deadline day transfer to Liverpool collapsed, despite the clubs reaching a £35 million agreement. The England defender had completed portions of his medical examination and agreed personal terms on a five-year contract running until 2030, but the move ultimately failed to materialise before Monday’s transfer window closure.
Palace manager, Oliver Glasner, had consistently opposed the sale throughout the summer, maintaining that his captain could not depart without a suitable replacement being secured. While the club successfully signed teenage defender, Jaydee Canvot, from Toulouse, their pursuit of Igor Julio fell through, leaving them without the defensive cover deemed necessary by Glasner.
The 25-year-old centre-back faces an uncertain future at Selhurst Park, with his current contract expiring at the end of this season. Should Guehi choose not to renew his terms, he would become available as a free agent next summer, allowing him to join any club without Palace receiving compensation.
Glasner emphasised the critical nature of retaining his captain during Sunday’s post-match press conference, following Palace’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa where Guehi scored the second goal. The Austrian manager revealed that an agreement existed whereby the defender could leave only if an appropriate replacement arrived, but stressed this condition remained unfulfilled.
The retention represents a significant boost for Palace both tactically and financially, though they will forgo the substantial transfer fee. Guehi has featured in 155 first-team matches since joining from Chelsea in 2021 and captained the side to their first major trophy in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last May.
