May 21, (THEWILL) — British-Nigerian actress and singer, Cynthia Erivo, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her outstanding services to music and drama.
She received the honour during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, May 19, where Prince William formally presented her with the medal.
Erivo, an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner, called the recognition “an honour I could never have thought would happen” and dedicated it to her mother’s lifelong support.
“I hope it shows that I care deeply about the work and will continue to do so to the best of my abilities”, she said in a social media post.
The 39-year-old performer was named in King Charles’ 2026 New Year Honours List alongside other British stars, including Idris Elba and Ellie Goulding.
Erivo first rose to international prominence with her Tony-winning role in “The Color Purple” on Broadway in 2015 and has since starred in “Harriet” (2019) and as Elphaba in the “Wicked” film adaptations.
She is among a small group of performers to receive nominations for all four major American entertainment awards, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, also known as an EGOT.
Erivo recently returned to the stage in “Dracula” and will star in the film “Children of Blood and Bone”, set for 2027.
