July 04, (THEWILL) – Andreas Christensen has been announced as a free agent by Barcelona after leaving Chelsea.
The centre back’s contract with Chelsea terminated at the end of June and he has now moved to join Xavi Hernadez’s side at Spotify Camp Nou. The Dane agreed to a four-year contract with a €500 million buy-out clause.
He becomes Barcelona’s second acquisition of the transfer window, following the Monday announcement of Franck Kessie’s transfer, also for free, from Serie A champion Milan. Christensen moved to Chelsea from Brondby in 2012, and he made his professional debut two years later. However, it was not until his two-year loan with Borussia Monchengladbach that his Blues career really started to take off.
In 167 appearances for the club across all leagues, including 26 last season, he netted four goals. He won the UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, Champions League, Europa League, and more throughout his time at Stamford Bridge and the Blues won 92 of the games in which Christensen played.
The signings of Christensen and Kessie appear to have shifted Barcelona’s attention to completing a deal for Leeds United winger Raphinha.
