July 04, (THEWILL) – Joao Moutinho has agreed to a new contract that will keep him with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers through the 2022/2023 season.
When his previous contract at Molineux expired on July 1, the Portugal international became a free agent. The 35-year-old had been rumoured to be in the process of signing with another team, but Wolves announced on their official website on Monday that he has signed a fresh one-year contract.
Moutinho is rumored to have been holding out for a two-year extension during the protracted negotiations over new terms, but Wolves director Scott Sellars is glad that a deal was made. An excited Sellars said: “In Joao’s time at the club, he’s been vital, bringing real experience and quality to the group, so to get him re-signed is a massive boost for us.
“With contracts, it’s about getting to a place where everybody’s happy, the club and the player, and it isn’t always easy. But in the end what matters is the outcome and we’re very happy with it. He’s a huge influence in the dressing room, with the younger players, and sets standards that they follow.”
As a Wolves player entering his fifth season, Moutinho has already made 176 appearances for the Premier League club, 39 of which came last season.
