March 29, (THEWILL) – Kevin De Bruyne has praised the “fun” approach of new Belgium manager, Domenico Tedesco, after their 3-2 victory against Germany in Tuesday’s friendly.
De Bruyne scored a goal and assisted two more in the match at RheinEnergieStadion, which made Tedesco the first Belgium coach to start with two victories since 2006. Tedesco also became the first manager to see his side score six goals in his first two games since 1999.
De Bruyne credited Tedesco’s foundation in terms of structure and playing style for the team’s success in their first eight days together. Speaking after the game, the coach said: “Yes, I am satisfied after these two victories. Not only with the result, but also with the way we played. Only we should have finished the game in the first half.
“I wanted my players to show courage, to play forward and to claim the ball, even when Germany put pressure on us. We have the players for it. We have to believe in our own strengths, but we have to maintain the quality we bring for 90 minutes. And that’s the problem.”
Tedesco’s new era offers early promise for the talented group of Belgian footballers, who crashed out of the World Cup group stages in Qatar under former coach Roberto Martinez. The victories over Germany and Sweden in Euro 2024 qualifying have given the team renewed enthusiasm under Tedesco’s guidance.
