March 29, (THEWILL) – Morocco and Peru ended their friendly match in a goalless draw at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on Tuesday, with a lot to note about the fixture.
Firstly, the match was overshadowed by events off the field. The Peruvian team was involved in a scuffle with Spanish police at their hotel in Madrid, and then, a hotel worker was arrested for posting derogatory comments and racist slurs about the Moroccan team on social media.
The game itself was played at a fast pace, with both teams attempting to score early in the tie. Hakim Ziyech had the best chance for Morocco, but his shot went wide. It was a recurring theme throughout the match was neither team was clinical enough to break the deadlock.
In the 79th minute, referee, Juan Martinez Munuera, was compelled to fish for his red card and flashed it before Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal and Carlos Zambrano of Peru for violent conduct. There were no other goals until the final whistle.
Morocco could not replicate the display that saw them defeat Brazil 2-1 in a friendly on Saturday, which was their first game since reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar.
