BEVERLY HILLS, November 30, (THEWILL) –Â On Monday night football in the English Premier League, Fulham claimed a rare away win as they shocked high-flying Leicester City 2-1 and climbed out of the relegation zone.
The Cottagers broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark with England left winger Ademola Lookman putting his previous Panenka penalty miss behind him courtesy of a composed finish.
The late Papa Bouba Diop was remembered as Lookman paid tribute to his memory as part of his goal celebrations. The 23-year-old forward held a Senegal shirt with the former Fulham midfielder’s number on the back aloft as an honour to Bouba Diop.
The opportunity to double their lead came in the 38th minute when the visitors were awarded a penalty following a VAR intervention. Winger Bobby Reid was brought down in the area by left back Christian Fuchs and though the referee denied the penalty appeal, VAR gave it.
Fulham striker Ivan Cavaleiro banished his own spot-kick woes after his miss against Everton, to give Scott Parker’s charges a deserved double lead going into the interval.
A win held the glorious promise of moving Leicester level on points with current league leaders Tottenham Hotspur. But the hosts struggled to find a way back into the contest in the second half.
Four minutes from time and substitute left winger Harvey Barnes scored to reduce the arrears. Fulham failed to deal with a midfielder Youri Tielemans’ cross allowing Jamie Vardy to nod for Barnes who rifled in his fifth goal of the season. But, it was too late to help them rescue a point.
The result sees Fulham scale up to 17th place with only their second league win of the season. Leicester stay fourth.
Next up, Leicester visit Zorya Luhansk in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Fulham are next at Manchester City on Sunday.
