November 24, (THEWILL) — German actor Udo Kier, renowned for his intense gaze and daring performances, has died at the age of 81.
His partner, Delbert McBride, confirmed that Kier passed away in a hospital in Palm Springs, California, on Sunday morning, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Kier was born in Cologne, Germany, in October 1944 and moved to London at the age of 18 to pursue a career in acting.
His career spanned six decades and featured more than 200 film and television projects.
He first gained wide recognition in the early 1970s for leading roles in films such as Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974).
He went on to work with celebrated filmmakers Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Lars von Trier on notable projects, including The Stationmaster’s Wife (1977), Lili Marleen (1981), and Breaking the Waves (1996), among others.
Kier also made his mark in mainstream Hollywood, appearing in hits such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), Armageddon (1998), and Blade (1998).
His passing marks the end of an exceptional career in international cinema.
