June 8 (THEWILL) — British actor, Idris Elba, has dismissed long-running rumours linking him to the role of James Bond, saying the speculation was “never legit”.
Speaking in a recent interview for the latest cover story of British GQ, Elba said he never considered himself a realistic choice for the role.
“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing”, he said, adding that while he was flattered by the rumours, some audiences around the world might not accept a Black actor playing the iconic spy.
Elba also said the franchise should stay true to its original identity.
“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. Just be Bond”, he stated.
The actor has been linked to the role for more than a decade, with many fans calling for him to become the first Black actor to play the British spy following Daniel Craig’s departure.
However, Elba previously said the conversation became uncomfortable when discussions focused more on race than his acting ability.
The search for the next James Bond is currently underway, with casting director, Nina Gold, leading auditions and Denis Villeneuve expected to direct the next film.
Actors reportedly being considered for the role include Tom Francis, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner.
