March 25, (THEWILL) — Veteran Nollywood actress, Ireti Doyle, has explained why she chose not to publicly discuss her divorce from ex-husband, Patrick Doyle.
Speaking in an interview with Morayo Afolabi Brown, Doyle said the details of the separation were private and not for public consumption, adding that only close family and friends deserved any explanation.
“First of all, you didn’t hear anything because it wasn’t your business. The only people you owe an explanation to, if at all, are those small family and friends who gathered on day one”, she said.
Doyle also criticised the culture of sharing personal relationship issues online, noting that public opinion offers little value.
“You see, the larger audience you’re performing for does not care. I personally would never knowingly give myself up as clickbait”, she said.
She stressed that people going through breakups should focus on healing rather than seeking validation online.
“You’re never going to win, so who are you explaining your matter to? The end of a long-term relationship, let alone marriage, is painful. Whatever the circumstances, not apportioning blame is painful. You need to spend the energy you’re using to perform for an audience who doesn’t care to sit down, go deep within, understand what went wrong for the sole purpose of not making the same mistake again”, she said.
Doyle confirmed in January 2023 that her marriage to Patrick Doyle had officially ended. The couple, who were married for nearly two decades and have six children together, had reportedly separated years earlier before finalising the divorce.
She also noted at the time that she would retain the Doyle name due to the brand she had built with it.
