January 22, (THEWILL) — American online streamer, Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as iShowSpeed, drew widespread attention on Wednesday, after live-streaming his first full day in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of his ongoing “Speed Does Africa” tour.
The 21-year-old arrived in Lagos on January 21, 2026, his birthday, and broadcast much of the visit live on YouTube and Twitch.
The “Speed Does Africa” tour, which began on December 29, 2025, is a 28-day journey across 20 African countries, focused on experiencing local culture, public interactions and fan engagement.
Before arriving in Nigeria, the tour had included stops in Angola, South Africa, Kenya and Senegal.
Nigeria, the 15th country on his itinerary, saw Speed immediately streaming as his convoy moved through busy parts of Lagos. Wearing a Nigerian football jersey and standing through the sunroof of his vehicle, he attracted large crowds of residents who followed him, waving, shouting and recording videos on their phones.
As the crowd grew, security officials stepped in at several points to ensure his safety. Despite the challenges, Speed continued interacting with locals, some of whom appeared unaware of his global online presence.
One of the most memorable moments of the day came when a group of Nigerian school children gathered around Speed and sang “Happy Birthday”, marking his 21st birthday.
Speed later visited Freedom Park, where he watched local performances and sampled Nigerian jollof rice, which he praised during the livestream. He also toured the Nike Art Gallery in Lekki, where he was welcomed in traditional Yoruba attire.
The visit included encounters with Nigerian content creators and entertainers. Popular creator Peller made several dramatic but unsuccessful attempts to meet him, including chasing his convoy on a horse. Social media personality Egungun of Lagos and TikTok creator Jarvis also crossed paths with him, while Afrobeats singer Zlatan Ibile surprised Speed with a birthday cake, which he said was the first he had ever received.
During the livestream, Speed also received a birthday call from Nigerian music star, Davido, adding to the day’s celebrations.
A key highlight of the day came when Speed surpassed 50 million subscribers on YouTube while livestreaming from Lagos, a milestone celebrated by fans and fellow creators online.
By the end of the day, iShowSpeed’s Lagos livestream had attracted significant attention online, marking a notable stop on his African tour and reflecting the reach of his global audience.
