May 10, (THEWILL) — Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has condemned xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The actor made the remark while accepting the Industry Merit Award at the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) held on Saturday in Lagos.
Kanayo dedicated the award to African filmmakers and industry veterans, reflecting on the sacrifices made by veterans since the early days of the industry.
He also appreciated media company Canal+ for supporting African entertainment.
He later addressed the issue of xenophobic violence in South Africa, calling on Africans to speak against the attacks.
“I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa. There must be somewhere Africans will call their home,” he said.
Xenophobic tensions in South Africa have affected several Nigerians over the years through harassment, attacks on businesses, and loss of lives during violent outbreaks.
Tensions escalated again in late April 2026 following anti-immigrant protests in parts of the country.
