April 01, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich delivered a commanding performance under their new coach, Thomas Tuchel, as they beat rivals Borussia Dortmund 4-2 at Allianz Arena on Saturday.
Tuchel, who took over from Julian Nagelsmann during the international break, was tasked with dethroning Dortmund from the top spot in the Bundesliga.
It was an impressive start for Tuchel on the opposite side of the Klassiker rivalry, with Gregor Kobel’s error and Thomas Muller’s brace putting Bayern 3-0 up within the first 23 minutes. Kingsley Coman added a fourth goal early in the second half, before Emre Can and Donyell Malen scored two consolations for Dortmund, who suffered their first league defeat since November.
The game’s opening goal was a bizarre moment, with Dayot Upamecano’s long throughball apparently heading towards Kobel, only for Dortmund’s goalkeeper to misjudge it and accidentally kick the ball into his own net.
Bayern’s dominant display was exemplified by the fact that all four of their goals were scored before the hour mark. The result sees them move within two points of Dortmund in the Bundesliga table. Bayern will face Frieburg on Tuesday in their next game while Leipzig will welcome Dortmund to the Red Bull Arena the following day.
