July 19, (THEWILL) – The Barcelona summer transfer window, which has been flourishing so far, will now focus on a new defender, according to club president, Joan Laporta.
The Blaugrana have already signed free agent Andreas Christensen from Chelsea, but the majority of their activity has been on the other end of the field. Franck Kessie, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski have all signed on, and Ousmane Dembele has extended his time at Camp Nou by agreeing to a new contract.
Barcelona’s offence is done, according to Laporta, and they will now focus on bolstering their defence over the coming weeks. The President said: “Now it’s time to work on the defence. Xavi has us focused on a series of players and I hope that the Catalans can have a few more joys. My dream is for Barca to become a world reference again and we are working for it.
“If the economy does not recover, it will be very difficult. We are achieving it, but we have to work even more. Football does not wait. You have to do it now. With Dembele, Raphinha, Lewandowski, Kessie, Auba, Ferran… I think Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff are doing a good job.”
Despite Chelsea’s interest, Barca has persisted in trying to sign Sevilla center-back Jules Kounde. They also anticipate engaging in direct negotiations with Chelsea over deals for Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso. Laporta claimed that their appeal is strong enough to sign any player, using Lewandowski as an example, despite competing against teams with greater financial resources.
