July 19, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced the five-year contract signing of Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence, as a wingback for the team that Antonio Conte is putting together.

The announcement puts an end to a tortuous and drawn-out affair in which Spurs, who originally inquired about Spence’s availability for the summer in January, eventually acquired one of their top transfer targets this summer.

Spence joins Tottenham as their sixth acquisition of the transfer season and, more crucially, counts toward their requirement for domestic talent in front of their UEFA Champions League comeback next season. The defender helped Nottingham Forest win promotion to the English Premier League via the Championship play-offs during his time there on loan last season.

Several top-flight clubs, including Forest, remained interested in signing Spence on a permanent basis. However, most of them lost interest when it became clear that he would join Tottenham, a possibility that even Boro manager Chris Wilder acknowledged last month was highly likely.

Spence joins Spurs this summer along with Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, and Clement Lenglet.
