July 08, (THEWILL) – Clement Lenglet’s loan transfer to Tottenham Hotspur from La Liga side, Barcelona, is on course, with the defender getting a medical done at the north London club on Friday.
The Frenchman, whose season-long contract with Spurs was agreed upon with Barca at the end of June, is set to complete the transfer procedures. Spurs went for Lenglet after Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni turned them down because head coach Antonio Conte was looking for a left-footed center-back to fit his three-at-the-back system.
At Camp Nou, the Frenchman spent the entirety of the previous season on the outside looking in and frequently was only given opportunities to play off the bench. As a result, he has been determined to be unnecessary for the time being. However, Barca expects him back as there is no option to buy included in the deal though both sides can renegotiate that term in the future.
Lenglet will join the likes of Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster, and Richarlison as Spurs’ sixth acquisition of the transfer window as Conte strengthens his squad in preparation for a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
Tottenham winger, Steven Bergwijn, left the team on Friday and went back to the Netherlands to join Ajax for €30 million.
