July 08, (THEWILL) – Mexico women’s national team lost 3-0 to Haiti on Thursday, which effectively meant that the United States women’s national soccer team (USWNT) has secured a spot at the 2023 World Cup.
Ever since the inception of the female World Cup in November 1991, the USWNT has participated in every edition. Next year, they will attempt to win the country’s third straight title and fifth overall in what has been a dominant run at the biggest female football stage.
The USWNT handled their own game with finesse earlier on Thursday at the CONCACAF W Championship by thumping Jamaica 5-0 to maintain their perfect record in Group A of the competition. Sophia Smith scored two of the team’s goals, and the other scorers in the win were Rose Lavelle, Kristie Mewis, and Trinity Rodman.
The USWNT put up a commanding performance that had the potential to be a rout against the Jamaicans. Two other goals the Americans scored were determined to be offside and overruled by the video assistant review system. The team outshot Jamaica 20-4 (with 11-2 shots on goal) and had 68% of ball possession.
Qualifying means the US is primed for another World Cup title run with Thursday’s game a good indication of that. The USWNT is the favourite to win the World Cup, for what will be three times in a row, but France, Germany, and England will be tough competitors.
