December 20, (THEWILL) – Manchester United has begun negotiations with PSV Eindhoven for the January transfer of the talented Cody Gakpo.
The United hierarchy has approved the move to sign the Dutch international, in accordance with manager Erik ten Hag’s wishes. Ten Hag has been interested in the player since last summer when he arrived at Old Trafford to take over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Gakpo scored nine goals and notched 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games before the World Cup, raising his price tag dramatically from what it was at the beginning of the season.
The 23-year-old also scored in every group game in Qatar, helping the Netherlands advance to the quarter-finals where they eventually lost to eventual champion, Argentina on penalties. PSV is aware that his achievements over the previous six months have improved his reputation and worth.
Ahead of the English Premier League break for the World Cup, United and Ten Hag have parted company with Cristiano Ronaldo, and the cancellation of the Portuguese’s contract – which came at little to no cost to United – has freed up space on the books for a successor. United may now move on with a deal as Ten Hag advised them to pursue Gakpo.
