June 29 (THEWILL) — The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” has become the highest-grossing biopic in cinema history, earning about $977 million worldwide.
The film has now surpassed Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, which previously held the record with about $975 million globally.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, “Michael” follows the life of Michael Jackson, from his early days with The Jackson 5 to his rise as the “King of Pop”.
The film stars Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.
Since its release in April 2026, the film has earned about $370 million in North America and more than $600 million internationally. It opened strongly and continued to perform well through the summer box office period.
The film has also become Lionsgate’s highest-grossing movie ever.
Despite its success, it has faced criticism for not including some controversial parts of Jackson’s life, including abuse allegations.
Reports also say a sequel is being discussed following the film’s strong box office performance.
