April 24, (THEWILL) — The long-awaited Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’ has officially hit theaters worldwide, delivering a record-breaking start at the box office.
The film earned $12 million to $13.5 million from Thursday previews and early IMAX screenings in North America, ahead of its official Friday release.
Internationally, it opened in 82 markets with $18.5 million, setting record first-day numbers in France, the UK, Italy, and Australia.
Fans have responded enthusiastically, giving the film a 96% audience score.
Critics, however, have been harsher, with a 40% rating, citing the film’s “sanitized” ending that avoids the child sexual abuse allegations Jackson faced in the 1990s.
The Guardian called it a “frustratingly shallow, inert picture,” while The Independent described it as a “ghoulish, soulless cash grab.”
Despite mixed reviews, Jaafar Jackson has been widely praised for his “uncanny” and “dazzling” performance as Michael.
The film also impresses with faithful recreations of iconic performances, including “Motown 25” and the “Thriller” music video.
Colman Domingo received recognition for his strong portrayal of Michael’s father, Joe Jackson.
Produced by Graham King and backed by the Michael Jackson estate, the film had a budget of $170 million to $200 million.
Producers have hinted at a potential sequel to cover the later years of Jackson’s life.
‘Michael’ has clearly captured fan excitement, proving a box office success even as critics debate its portrayal of the King of Pop.
