August 30, (THEWILL) — Newcastle United have completed their most expensive transfer in the club’s history with the acquisition of striker, Nick Woltemade, from VfB Stuttgart. The deal totals €80 million, comprising an initial fee of €75 million plus potential add-ons worth €5 million, making the 23-year-old German international the Magpies’ primary summer signing.
Woltemade has committed to a long-term contract at St James’ Park following an impressive campaign in the Bundesliga where he netted 17 goals across 33 appearances. The forward also claimed the top scorer award at the European Under-21 Championship this summer, finding the net six times for Germany during the tournament.
The striker was enthusiastic about joining Eddie Howe’s squad, stating that Newcastle demonstrated genuine interest from initial discussions and outlined ambitious plans for his development. Standing at 6ft 6in, Woltemade brings versatility to the attacking line, capable of operating across multiple forward positions including central striker, attacking midfielder, and wide forward roles.
This acquisition addresses Newcastle’s need for striking options following Callum Wilson’s departure and ongoing uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s future. The Swedish forward has not appeared for the team this season and recently made public statements criticising the club’s handling of his situation, following a rejected £110 million bid from Liverpool.
Newcastle’s pursuit of attacking reinforcements saw them target several alternatives throughout the transfer window, including Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jorgen Strand Larsen and various other forwards. However, Woltemade emerged as their primary target after Bayern Munich’s multiple unsuccessful attempts to sign the player from Stuttgart.
