May 28 (THEWILL) — Hollywood actor, Nicolas Cage, has revealed that he legally changed his name from Nicolas Kim Coppola to Nicolas Cage last year.
The actor shared the news in a recent interview with Variety, saying he wanted to separate himself from his famous Hollywood family, including his uncle, director Francis Ford Coppola.
“I am Nick Cage. I changed my name legally last year,” he said. “I’m Nick Cage in life, and I’m Nick Cage on camera.”
Cage said he wanted to create his own identity instead of being linked to the Coppola name.
The actor was born Nicolas Kim Coppola and began using “Cage” as a stage name early in his career. He previously said the name was inspired by Marvel character, Luke Cage, and composer, John Cage.
According to Cage, he wanted a name that was “short and sweet”, similar to actor James Dean.
He has used the name professionally for more than 40 years, starting shortly after his role in the 1982 film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
Cage said people often connected him to his uncle’s films during the early years of his career, which made it harder for him to build his own path in Hollywood.
Cage is currently promoting his upcoming projects, including the series “Spider-Noir” and the film “Madden.”
