June 02, (THEWILL) – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has picked the reigning African champions in the 100m hurdles, Tobiloba Amusan, Long Jump, Ese Brume, Discus, Chioma Onyekwere and Shot Put, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, in the 54-man strong contingent to represent Nigeria at the 22nd African Athletics Championships billed for Mauritius from June 8 to 12.
In addition to the 4x100m relay, Amusan will compete in two solo events: the women’s 100m alongside Godbless Tima Seikeseye and Praise Ofoku, as well as the 100m hurdles, where she is set to defend the title she won at the 21st edition of the Championships in Asaba four years ago.
Ese Brume, who won gold in the long jump in 2014, 2016, and 2018, will be looking for her fourth straight title, while Onyekwere will be looking for her second Discus crown after winning gold in Asaba. Also, Enekwechi will be defending his Shot Put title, which he won at the same Championship with a new 21.08m Championships record.
The strong contingent also has Orobosa Anabel Frank, whose 17.21m effort at the AFN All-Comers competition in Benin in March, ranks her tops in women’s Shot Put this year. The team also includes Oyesade Olatoye, a bronze medalist in the women’s Hammer throw, Fadekemi Olude, a bronze medalist in the women’s 10km walk, and Patience Okon George, a bronze medalist in the women’s 400m event in 2014.
