August 29, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the final 23-man squad for the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa next month.
Led by head coach Eric Sekou Chelle, the team will gather in Uyo at the start of September to prepare for these pivotal Group C fixtures.
The squad blends experienced players with emerging talent, aiming to bolster Nigeria’s position in the tightly contested qualification race.
In goal, Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United remains the first-choice goalkeeper, joined by Amas Obasogie of Singida Blackstars and Adeleye Adebayo of Volos FC.
The defensive line features captain William Troost-Ekong of Al-Kholood, alongside Fulham’s Calvin Bassey, Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina, and Birmingham City’s Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Bruno Onyemaechi, Chidozie Awaziem, Felix Agu, and Benjamin Fredrick complete a robust backline, with Fredrick earning a call-up after impressing at the 2025 Unity Cup in London.
In midfield, Besiktas’ Wilfred Ndidi anchors the squad, supported by Alex Iwobi of Fulham, Frank Onyeka of Brentford, and Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Christantus Uche add dynamism.
The forward line is led by Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray, Ademola Lookman of Atalanta, and Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milan, with Cyriel Dessers, Moses Simon, and Tolu Arokodare providing attacking depth.
These matches, scheduled for September 6 against Rwanda in Uyo and three days later against South Africa in Bloemfontein, are critical for Nigeria, who sit fourth in Group C with seven points.
With South Africa leading the group at 13 points, the Super Eagles must earn victories to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
